Acorn Bag Help…

8 04 2011

Help?

Update: thanks to everyone that tried to help. I am an unworthy Canadian and will simply have to accept that…;-)

So this Acorn Roll Bag that I am after [black with tan straps shown above] is available on their webshop, but it won’t let me buy it and ship it to a friend in the US because I am….*sigh* Canadian! Uber lame! If anyone reading this blog post in the US would buy this for me and ship it to me in Canada I’ll cover all your expenses + $20 extra. If you can help out pls post a comment so only 1 bag is bought.

Thanks!

BTW – if by any chance more than one bag is bought you won’t get stuck with it. I will buy more than one if that happens and either use it or sell it.

I tried but got this “Sorry, “Roll Bag – Black canvas w/ Honey Brown leather” couldn’t be added to your cart because they’re all being held in other buyers’ carts. Buyers have 30 minutes to checkout, after which it may become available again.”

Hey Vik,

I can help you out. I presume UPS / Paypal is cool?

PS – If you’re the one holding it… you may want to release it… “Sorry, “Roll Bag – Black canvas w/ Honey Brown leather” couldn’t be added to your cart because they’re all being held in other buyers’ carts. Buyers have 30 minutes to checkout, after which it may become available again.”

USPS shipping would be best and paypal works for me.

Thanks…no worries if it doesn’t pan out. At least nobody can say we didn’t try!

Hah! I grabbed a handlebar bag (for myself). It wasn’t available yesterday.

Thanks for all the efforts! I’m getting a t-shirt made that will say “I’m Acorn’s Bitch!”…j/k…=-)~

Clearly us Canadians are not worthy of Acorn’s fine bags – not even when upstanding US cyclists are willing to help out.

Hahahaha…=-)

Hey Vik,

I sent Acorn an email, asking to be notified when the Acorn Roll Bag will be in stock. Perhaps they will have one soon, then I will buy it.

if you still do not have one, or want another one for Sharon, I will send it to you.

Gary

Thanks Gary. I think you can be pretty certain I won’t have one anytime soon!…=-)

That shirt would be awesome… if you really want to obsess, ping me and email and I’ll respond with my cell phone number… if you keep an eye out for when one pops up, you could text me and I can try to snag it with my iPhone (presuming it’s not 2a or something… I might not wake up…)

Maybe you need to ask whether they would be willing to work with you to open a Canadian franchise!

8 04 2011
thelazyrando

@Foraker – that seems like a lot of work so I can buy one bag…=-) Besides given the low production levels I doubt they’d give a dirty Canadian any bags as that would deprive a worthy native son/daughter of the US of a bag….;-)~

Vik,

Just so you know, I did try to add the roll bag to my cart, but couldn’t. I wasn’t snubbing you.

@David – no worries my congratulations were sincere! I’m glad somebody got something…=-)

Alternatively, you could sew up one of your own. If you’re at all handy at sewing, it shouldn’t take more than 5-6 hours, and then you’ll have one without having to do the gyrations needed to get past the no-exports rule.

I can’t sew at all – let alone leather and canvas – let alone anything that I would want to be seen using!

A better alternative would be to buy a Carradice or Berthoud bag as they like Canadians…=-)

I’ve always thought these were pretty cool seat bags.. not quite as functional…

I could buy one of those anytime! Without making me their bitch…what’s the point?…hahaha…j/k…=-)

I sorta refuse to pay their somewhat exorbitant prices. They never seem to have anything in stock. Either take custom orders or work more to keep stock up. I can’t abide them.

How about asking the porcelain rocket guy to make something

@Paul – I mentioned to Scott that there was a market for canvas and leather bags. Those are not materials he works in at the moment. Should he do so you can be sure I will talk to him about such a beast.

@Vik,

As your fried, I have to ask… Have you considered talking with someone, preferably a certified professional, about why you seek out companies that make you feel this way?

😉

PS – a couple people contacted me privately and voiced some concern that I might jump off a bridge or send a letter bomb to Acorn. I want to assure you I am not depressed nor do I hate Acorn. I’m not stoked about their policy regarding letting a Canadian buy a bag – especially when it would be shipped to a US address, but it’s really not a big deal. It was an exciting morning and you have to embrace whatever happens in your life whether that’s the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat!…=-)

Hi Vik,

How about Riv’s sackville tool bag-similar enough to the acorn bag, without the shipping hassles and a bit cheaper?

Cheers and happy riding with the BC rando’s

Scott

@Scott – the Riv bag isn’t big enough as I’d like to fit a spare 650B tire in there and two tubes plus my tools. Berthoud makes a decent sized saddle bag that matches my bar bag so I’d go with that first. They don’t mind selling to Canadians…=-)~

Vik, there is also the Carradice zippered roll. I think it is about the same size (maybe a bit bigger). It is readily available and they will ship to Canada no problem. You don’t have to pay UK VAT of 20% either.

So, why doesn’t Acorn want to ship to Canada? I haven’t them yet as to why….or did I ages ago and not get a response? Anyway, Canada is such a small marketshare and we’re right next door, regular usps shipping is fine. Their bags are so adorable! I understand that maybe they have to keep things small, but then shouldn’t have articles written about them in bike porn mags other countries get to look at!
Vik, I used to share a mailbox with some friends in Bellingham and we’d shop online/ebay etc…to get better deals on stuff and stuff not available in Canada. Once in awhile someone would take a wee drive down and pick up. not that you need to go to all that trouble for a wee saddle bag….do you?

I think the motivation behind US only orders is that they have limited production and a bit of an order backlog. Therefore they want to concentrate on serving their home market first. Also I think international shipping and sales can be more complicated (even to Canada). Maybe once they can keep up with demand they will start shipping to Canada.

Acorn Bags still won’t sell to customers without a US paypal address as of this week. Which is a shame, as I am in Toronto as well, and had a bike in need of a bag and the Acorn variety just fit the bill.

The husband and wife team are completely comfortable with how they are now and don’t see themselves expanding anytime soon, so their small production number bags should remain quite sparse and even more so in the Canadian environment!!

Occasionally some US buyers decide the bag isn’t for them and decide to sell them on local forums or *gasp* even other blogs!

I managed to score a new bag, by googling, and found this:
http://m.designsponge.com/2012/01/acorn-bike-bags.html

and the seller still had it!

It now rests comfortably in Toronto Canada, and its easily the nicest bag I will probably ever own.
