Surly Rolling Darryls…

I’m not up to speed on buying fat bike parts these days since it’s been a while since my Pugs saw some upgrades. If you were to buy some of the Surly Rolling Darryl rims with cut outs and have them shipped to a US address in the next week or so who would have the best price and have them in stock?

Any tips would be appreciated… =)

not sure about the best price but jensonusa.com have them, as does bikeman.com and fatbikes.com

You are going to love them — not just for the weight savings but for the ability to choose your favorite color of rim tape (yeah, it is a minor thing, but once I went with red tape I ended up changing a lot of other things on my Pugs to match). Bought mine at the local bike shop since they always give me a good deal.

http://fatbikes.com/rims/html seems to have some stuff but further investigation may be needed. There are few options still in tis market, there’s always the Surly site. You can bring up the rims section & there is a “buy local” button just below the image that may bring you to a shop close by.

I’ve given up on my LBS for special orders after many problems with them. I use LBS for what they have in stock and look elsewhere for any speciality items. Back in Calgary my old LBS did a great job with special orders so I used them a lot more.

But you could use that resource to find what US LBS near you have the rims you want, in stock, & can ship them to a US address like you said.

@Aaron M – I could and I looked at who were the local Surly dealers, but then I’d be special ordering from a LBS I’ve never dealt with and I’m only in the US a limited time so if it goes off the rails I don’t have time to get stuff sorted out. That didn’t sound like much fun.

I’d rather deal with someone that sells and ships parts regularly. Fatbikes.com is a LBS that sells online – unfortunately they are out of stock.

Sharon likes the DIY cutouts on her LM rims because they look sweet and everyone ogles her Pugs when we met them and mine gets overlooked. I’ll get my RD’s powder coated to match my frame before I get them laced into wheels.

BTW – only place I found RDs in stock online is at Jenson USA. It’s possible they also may not have any as the online store product status could be in error.

Jenson USA does a fantastic job of shipping orders to Canada, and their shipping fees aren’t too punishing. Maybe no need to arrange and time a pick-up during your travels.

TreeFortBike seems to have them in stock at this time, they also price match to just about any price online, and if you are alright with a longer shipping time you get free 5 day shipping on $125+ orders. http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/333222368358/354/Surly-Holy-Rolling-Darryl.html

I’m not affiliated with them, but I bought a few hundred in stuff – 27tpi 3.8″ knards, a few Q-Tubes Extreme 26″ x 2.35 – 2.75″ [for $7.38 each], and some tools and a lot of odds and ends. Beware though a lot of their stock is in their warehouse and it can delay them shipping it all out by a day or more, so calling ahead to check would be best, but it should go quickly.

Best of luck in your travels!

@Val – ordering stuff from US to Canada is not a big deal, but shipping and 12% HST + the $9-$10 CRA fee adds up. Figured if I was in US on way home might as well take advantage of cheap and easy shipping options.

It seems RD’s are in short supply until Feb. Since I don’t need ‘em to keep the bike rolling I’m going to forget about it for now.

I found RD’s at Treefort. Lowest price as well with free shipping and no tax where I’m getting them sent in California.

I’ve bought a ton of stuff from Treefort. They are slow to ship but the low prices generally make up for it.

I got my neck romancer from Freewheel in Minnesota bc first in town to have a fatbike. The shipped fast and cheap. Second order was fenders and tubes same great service. Website has home page custom RD. Call and ask for Troy. He should remember me. Ship them to someone in the US and put them on the bike and drive them over. http://freewheelbike.com/about/hand-built-fat-bike-wheels-pg749.htm
