Ogre Ogling PT2…

7 02 2012

18" Surly Ogre at the Fairfield Bicycle Shop...

I couldn’t resist sitting on it again. The 18″ fits me pretty well although if I were to get one I might go for the 20″ so I could use some Jones style swept back H-bars.

I love army green bikes!

@Ian: 5’11″ 33″ inseam

It’s not a matter of wanting it – I have no place to put it!

I thought one commonly put bikes between one’s legs…

Different strokes, I guess.

Thanks for the sizing up photo…Vic you seem to be stuck in that 19″ frame range.. I’m 510″ with a 33″ inseam.. .. I think i would have to go with the 20, my arms are long.

@Bruce – that was so funny I almost didn’t realize you were joking. If I want a new bike in my garage I need to get rid of one.

Nice bike… I am in the process of building a Troll. Much prefer the green to the Agent Orange but wanted the 26″ wheels. Really looking forward to getting it finished!

Loving your blog … though no contact form or mail to be found. ^^ Please forgive me on posting this in here.

Similar Problem:
The story: gotta do the step and drop my money into a Pugsley, a nice IGH straight outta Fuldatal and some nice parts. Normally I would have a test ride and try to imagine how it would be with a different bar but there’s absolutely no possibility on even riding a Pugsley in here … So maybe you could give me an advice concerning the frame size when using a Jones Loop H-Bar.

I’m about 5’8″ and 34.5″ inseam and would normallly get a 19″ish frame. I case of the pugsley the 18″ one would be absolutely fine. But the bar … From your experience: would it make sense to take the 20″ frame to compensate the backsweep or should a longer stem be enough?

Cheers from Germany,
Andi

Oops … I meant 5’10″ … Stupid calculator. ^^

I’d go with the 20″ Pugsley frame Andi.

Yeah … been afraid of that. ^^
But thanks. Going to get the 20″.

Vic, I’m in my first year of cycling and have an inseam question. When you say it’s 33″ is that your pants inseam or top of seat to pedal distance or…? Any help is appreciated. I’m ordering an Ogre frame set tomorrow and am trying to decide on a size. I’d like to get the 20″ for the top tube length but am a little afraid of the standover. My 19″ el mariachi was perfect and my 18″ big dummy is a little small (but I wanted it that way for that bike). A 31″ standover just touches “the boys” but I run 35 1/8″ top of seat to top of pedal. Thoughts?

@Eric – my pants inseam is 33″. I size bikes by TT only. My 29er MTB is a 19.5″ frame and I have no standover clearance – my boys touch. I wouldn’t buy an 18″ frame to get SO since that would mess up the TT I need. I simply haven’t found SO clearance all that important. I have little on my bikes and I can’t recall ever injuring my boys.

So my advice is buy the size frame that has the right TT for a 90-100mm stem. That way you can go to a 70mm-110mm stem if needed to adjust the fit.

BTW – when in doubt I always buy the larger frame size.

Our Surly rep bought his Rohloff equiped Ogre into the shop last week. It was an 18″ & seemed quite big for it’s size. I’ve had an 18″ on back order for a while (glad I didn’t go for a 20″) & can’t wait to get it & build it up! As stated above I have a 33″ inseam (using the book method) & I’m 5′ 11″….

@Ian – I’m the same size as you and I found the 18″ Ogre TT short and that’s with “normal” MTB bars. If I put an H-bar on it the TT would be shorter.

Goes to show you that you can only size a bike to a certain extent by numbers. Actually sitting on the bike and riding it always tells you so much more.

Hi
Are you sure that was a size 18” Ogre on the pictures?
Because that seat tube looks way too tall and above the rear wheel, more like a 20”

@JP – that was definitely not a 20″ frame.
