I’m starting my job/contract search in earnest now. The GF and I talked about moving back to Calgary, but vetoed that idea plenty fast!

It’s either west coast Canada or California. If that doesn’t pan out than we’d open up the options to warm places like Australia!!!

I’m from California. Grew up there, went to school, worked a few years. I’ve left and won’t go back. Too darn expensive to live where all the fun stuff is. That, and I don’t foresee a great future for the state.

Now…. how ’bout Hood River, OR? ;)

let us know what place you have found that is better than portland(my favorite)
i am in wien and i have not found a better place yet. biking all year round and no morons jumping on you for not wearing a helmet(how ridiculous). no wonder it is the best city in the world for six years in a row

warm climate? nice for a vacation-if you need to live in a warm climate you want to go back to the cold climate

Vancouver Island is nicer than anywhere else I’ve visited the PNW by a long shot. Add in Sharon’s existing job and the hassles of getting US work visas which makes any move to the US only worthwhile if we get down to California where we have a lot of good friends, easy access to a bunch of recreational options that are different enough from Victoria to make it worthwhile and easy access to Baja.

I’ve spent a lot of time in California and it seems to me that you can dial in your lifestyle pretty well by choosing the right location. Compared to Canada cost of living in the that part of the US is nothing remarkable.

Since we have no debt there isn’t any major pressure to accept a specific opportunity unless it’s right for us. I’ll just start looking and wait until I find something with a good fit.

My wife and I were up in Victoria and on the island for our honeymoon, two years ago.. It really is nice there… I grew up in OR and WA, (live in baltimore now) I would agree that it is pretty much the cream of the crop for the PNW ..even though i am partial to some small towns in Oregon..Home is where you make it.. Jobs are always a factor in adult lives, baltimore has been a gold mine for both of us, and we get out and have a lot of fun. Plus I have enjoyed the fact that i live in a much maligned city.. I love it when we are out west , they ask where we are from, and we tell them, and you hear nothing but silence…

I lived in Victoria (well, just outside of Victoria at Royal Roads) for 2 years in the early 80’s. Absolutely loved being on Vancouver Island. I was pretty serious about running then and the local running scene was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed my time out there. I could see moving back when I retire (isn’t that what Victoria is? The land of the newly wed and nearly dead?!) Good luck on the job hunt.

I bet you’re loving the snow. After Christmas of my second year out there they had a ‘snow storm’ (maybe 10 cm of snow) and traffic came to a standstill for three days. Accidents galore. Are they any better drivers now?
