Hey Vik,
Any tips you’d give after introducing Sharon to mountain biking? My wife has loved transportation cycling and is now getting an itch for dirt. I’d love to take her out. It seems, though, that she has a bit more timidity than I ever did.

@Derrick – my only rule was not to teach her! I pointed her at MTB lessons and then a girl’s only MTB club that had beginner rides [essentially more lessons]. After 5 sessions Sharon is doing fine on beginner and easy intermediate trails.

The other thing to keep in mind is technical trails are very hard at first so once you are riding together find buff rolling single track where she can ride for long periods with the odd challenge every once in a while. Finding the right trails for her skills/interests is key.

Finally she needs a great bike. Most beginner ladies get or are given a pretty basic bike that’s not great and is often heavy. Not ideal since they are usually not strong and not skilled. Sharon got the same bike Kurt and I ride so she has the same platform to work from and mentally she doesn’t feel disadvantaged.

Kurt took me on a ride a few years back on a very techy trail. After getting off or falling off my bike 10 times in the first 200m I gave up and went back to the car. Last thing I wanted to do was more of the same for 3-5hrs!

Those are great thoughts. I’m trying to avoid that existence you had with Kurt. I just don’t want to invite frustration. I like the idea of taking her out to simple dirt riding before technical stuff. I think she’ll love being out in the woods. That may give her a taste for something more challenging. Thanks for writing back!

No problem. I hope it goes well.

Just remember you can turn off someone forever in one bad MTB ride, but if the trail is too easy that’s not going to matter other than to get them interested in a harder trail.

I would also see if you can hook her up with a MTBing lady for a couple rides. Being able to make mistakes with another woman in a non-judgemental atmosphere is a good thing for her confidence and her willingness to try stuff that will make her look silly at first – until she masters it.
