Lazy Rando Google Group

21 02 2011

Isn't Paris that way?

I started a Google Group for Victoria BC Area randonneurs of the less hardcore variety to arrange for training rides and discuss brevet plans.  Thinking about it anyone else who is a beginner randonneur or someone with some brevet experience that is getting back into the swing of things anywhere in the world is welcome to join and discuss issues that affect us at the slower end of the spectrum.

Ahh… I like it. I just found out last night that there’s a rando group here locally, and they have a scheduled series 200 thru 600. Starts next week though, I’m not quite up for that.

@Ian – start training this year and get the course details so you can try a 200K in the middle of the summer on your own.

That’s the idea. Looked at the route for the 200, its not bad. Looked at the route for the 300, it looks quite interesting.

On the down side, its really not looking good for making my intended start in the rando world in a couple weeks. I might have the cold and clothing figured out, but now the bike is just not cooperating in wanting to work right. Fix one problem, find another. *sigh*

@Ian – no worries about the SIR 100K. If it works out that would be great and if not no big deal. The actual event only takes a few hours on Saturday and I’ll be in Seattle from Friday through Monday if you want to hang out and/or tackle a casual ride looking at bike shop porn along the way.

Why not use the existing BC Randonneurs discussion group?

@Ryan – the BC Rando group is posts that would generally be of interest to the several hundred members of the club spread all over BC. This new group is for posts that would mainly be of interest to a handful of riders in the Victoria area. I don’t think the BC Rando group wants to know that you and I are meeting for a coffee at 5pm in Oak Bay and then heading up to Sidney where we’ll meet Bill and then cruise back to town via the Mill Bay Ferry and the Malahat. The goal of this group is to provide an easy way to communicate amongst Victoria area randos who want to meet for easy training rides.

I think you should still consider using the existing group. I agree the existing group has more members spread out a larger area. The existing list is fairly low traffic, and it would be nice to see more discussion on the existing list that other people might benefit from. If this new group is only for making ride plans, then I think that makes sense, but I imagine that there will be significant discussion about other aspects of Randonneuring that the broader group would benefit from (or the original poster may benefit from by reaching a wider audience). Especially since the community is fairly small as it is.

Training rides like you propose are a great way to encourage new members, I think, and I at least would like those discussions on the main mailing list. It might even encourage members in other parts of BC to do something similar!

My concerns are:

1) Other BC Randos don’t share your enthusiasm for knowing the minutiae of our training ride logistics.

2) Less fit and/or skilled randos don’t necessarily want to speak openly about stuff around guys that are going to ride PBP in 50hrs with a broken leg and one eye.

3) Talking about where and when to ride in our group does not in anyway preclude the same folks from talking about their experiences or asking questions on the main BC Rando group.

The whole issue may become academic in that so far only 2 people have joined and none are BC randos!
