Belt Drive Tikit

Gates belt drive on a Bike Friday Tikit...

Walter posted on his blog about adding a belt drive to a Bike Friday Tikit….looks good.  Belt drive and Shimano 11 speed Alfine IGH on a folding bike would be a great setup.  I’ll be keeping my eye on it for sure!

Hi there,

Some great Tikit information on here, thanks. I am trying to figure out the best/lightest rims for a Tikit. So far I’ve found the Velocity Aeroheat/head. These seem pretty light and I trust Velocity. Are there any other good options? I’d also like to run my tires tubeless with notubes/caffelatex. Do you have any experience with this?

Cheers,
David.

@ David – I use 26″ and 20″ Velocity Aeroheat rims on my other bikes and like them. I’ve never used the 16″ version on my Tikits and frankly the small 16″ wheels are so light and so strong due to their size I don’t worry too much about the rims…I don’t see them as nearly as important as they are on a 26″ or 700c wheel. I’d also point out that on a small wheel a wider tire like the GS Scorcher [search this blog for more info] is faster than a lighter thinner tire due to the suspension benefits

Are you ordering yourself a Tikit?

Hi [insert name here ;)]

OK, I’ll start with the OEM rims and replace as necessary.

I’m also a proponent of bigger tyres on 700c, the added benefit of comfort through bump absorption makes long rides much more enjoyable. I’ve spotted the GS Scorcher on here, and I’m very keen to get some.

I’m in the process of ordering a One Way, just trying to sort out a dealer to work with here in Europe. The Brompton rules here, but I want a bike that rides well.

cheers,
david.

You won’t be disappointed the Tikit is a super fun bike that rides very well compared to the Dahons and Bromptons I’ve test ridden.

I meant to say thanks for posting this the other day. I was thinking just the night before about the Alfine 11sp on a tikit. And there it was on the interwebs the next day. With belt drive, no less! I’ve emailed Walter at BF, and I’m on the list to be notified. I’m thinking orange, like yours.

@ Andy…no problemo…it looks quite promising.

BTW – I saw the new colour Wasabi Green in person and it’s pretty sweet as well…not as eye catching as orange, but nice in an understated way.

This is interesting:

Any pedals you want, removable.

Vik, I’m putting together a new Surly Cross Check commuter that will have a Gates Carbon Drive and Nexus 8 speed. The frame modifications are done and it’s at the painters. I hope to have it up and running by October 1st.

@Doug – awesome! Send me some photos and a write up for the blog when you get her rolling if you don’t mind?

@Vik…sure. Right now I’m in the nervous pre-new-bike-build stage. All the parts are ordered, or here, and the warranty voiding frame surgery has been completed and paid for. Now I’m practicing patience waiting for the powder coating to be done and then hope it all goes together….and actually works.
