Scorcher Porn…

Reflective sidewall bling...

I love my Greenspeed Scorchers.  I run them in 349 [16"] and 406 [20"] sizes on my Bike Friday Tikit and New World Tourist folders.  They are fast, comfortable, grippy and so far have been flat free in 4 cumulative riding seasons.  If I was going to complain about something it would be the plain jane looks of the Scorcher and the lame sidewall logo.

Old style Scorcher sidewall...

Kurt recently bought some new Scorchers from Bent Up Cycles for the Season Tikit he’s been riding. I was surprised and stoked to see a new version of the sidewall on the Scorchers when they came in.  They are funky looking, in a good way, and the reflective stripe is a nice feature.  Although I should note that this material is not as reflective as the material used on Schwalbe tires. Having said that I don’t think sidewall reflective stripes are a major safety benefit as much as they look cool.

I love the smell of fresh rubber in the morning...=-)

I don’t know if Greenspeed is selling both versions or if the reflective sidewall Scorchers are a new model that will replace the old style.  I need some new Scorchers for my Tikit so I’ll be crossing my fingers that I get some pimped out Scorchers like Kurt!…=-)

Scorchers work awesome so they might as well look awesome!

How are these tires in the rain? I have Schwalbe Marathon’s on my Season Tikit, and always thought the tread pattern was good for all season riding.

Recently, I have heard others say tread is irrelevant on a bicycle and really doesn’t make a difference.

Your thoughts?

They are great rain tires…tread serves no purpose on a bike tire used on paved roads. The shape of bike tires does not allow the possibility of hydroplaning unlike a square car tire and the more rubber touching the road the better the grip you get. Tire companies put some tread on many street tires for bikes because it’s easier to go with what people think they need than give them what they really need.

Vik,

I ordered a pair for my Tikit about 5 months ago from Harris Cyclery. They included the reflective sidewalls. They are by far my favorite.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and I do not find them good rain tires. They’re passable, but even after a little wear I’d find I would slide around on corners some. I would not feel safe with that amount of slide on a bike. I’ve used Marathon Pluses in the winter. I don’t like the significant drag they add, but I feel safer on them in the wet.

@Alex – I’ve used them in the rain a lot and even on gravel/mud MUPs in the rain. I’ve had no issue with them, but I run my pressure on the lower end of things which provides excellent grip, great comfort and doesn’t impact the rolling resistance much.

Typically I was swapping the stock Marathons back in for winter simply to make use of them.
